| Hello,
On occasions the bonnet pops open when driving the car. I have looked at the various WSM's including Saab's own but there is no information on adjustment.
Grateful if anyone can shed some light on adjustment, please.

| You can adjust the length of the pin, just loosen the nuts and screw it down a few turns so that it lengthens and the thick part gets under the locking mechanism.

| This is a pretty common issue. My first port of call would be to remove the locking mechanism, clean it with brake cleaner and inspect it. If it's just very dirty it probably doesn't close properly because it's sticking, but often they're worn out as well (replace the mechanism or weld and file back into shape). If the front panel has been off the car it may have been put back in a slightly different position, and the pin may need adjusting. Before doing so though, it may be worth loosening the screws and moving the panel around a bit to see if this solves the problem.

| Hi Richard, As Melle says moving the front panel will often sort it. I find a ratchet strap around the top of the front panel and looped around the transverse tube (strut brace thing) helps to hold it in place so you can tighten its fixings. I never realised you could change the length of the pin - nice! Cheers | |

| In theory you can lengthen the pin by screwing it out a bit, but the locking nut is usually on very tight.

| The pin can also be moved forward and back, as well as up and down, using the 2 locking nuts. Trick is to push the bonnet nearly closed, and squint into the gap, to make sure that the pin is going down well aligned, straight into the hole. If it's set too far forward or back, the pin can get stuck in the hole. Then it can be a real hassle to get the thing to release.
As Melle said, a key is also to have a well oiled, nicely greased mechanism. I spray WD40 in there, at least twice a year.

| Aye, OK Derek I should have added, "with some 3 in 1 in from the top.
Better than doing nowt, and having it all dry out, get rusty, and then stuck!

| I approve but prefer to have a spray can of lithium grease for this sort of job. It's less messy and seems to stay "dry". | |
