Thought id start off a project thread to keep track of our latest acquisition.

Named by nieces as Krystal

We traveled up to Banff in early September to pick her up and stopped off at my Grans in Meigle on the way back to Glasgow for the now traditional Saab photo shoot. My grandad was a Saab fanatic and we spent most of our time as kids in and out of 95's, 96's and 99's in various states of repair.

She behaved really well on the drive back down with no major problems.

Now with black wheels.

Generally she is very tidy, theres a few body work issues that need sorting out. Some bubbling paint on the rear drivers side wing and the door bottoms need repainted.

Since September I've been using her almost as a daily driver. Added a DAB radio and hidden parcel shelf speakers to make commuting more entertaining.

Had a few issues with the master cylinder and used one of Johnsaabs rebuild kits and all was well.

Two weeks ago she wouldn't start, no spark, turns out the arm on the points had snapped off. Replaced that and a few other ignition bits and all seems good.

More recently Ive been having problems with crunching gears when changing. Most notably when changing into reverse. Ive rebuilt the slave and bled the system again but still the same issues.

Ive tried the clutch adjustment bolt but cant seem to not crunch when going into reverse.

Been doing a bit of reading and think ill try to add shims to the slave cylinder tomorrow. Oddly there are 4 washers on the bolt side of the slave. Might just be that its a longer than original bolt.

Hope to add more to this thread as I go along.

Wow! Beautiful job. Simply superb and a credit to you.

It's been a wee while since I last updated.

Managed to sort out the condensation issue, found the windscreen seal was leaking quite badly. Running a bead of windscreen silicone around the inside of the seal seems to have worked well.

Changed the spark plug cables out and suspect these were causing a lot of the rough running issues. Its been like a different car since.

I repainted the wings and 3/4 panels and while not perfect I'm a lot happier with it. Stickers hide some issues

Thanks Woddy.

I replaced the parcel shelf and wonder if my vent holes aren't big enough.

Suspect I'm getting some leaking at the front of the cabin which isn't helping, slightly damp floor. Will check seals round wipers and window.

A Finnish Saab enthusiast told me 40 odd years ago, to pull the sun visors back a little.
This would allow warm air coming from the windscreen vents to continue along the roof to the rear window,
and therefore proceed through the holes in the parcel shelf and into the boot area and ultimately out the elephant ear vents as Saab intended.
It also aids de-misting the rear screen.
Worked for me with the V4s I had on the road over the years, except the rally car which had the boot and parcel shelf sealed off for fireproofing.
De-misting the screen was a problem until I put a sick-on inner screen which did not mist up inside.
Great to see it on the road after all your exemplary work.

With regards to condensation, I leave a couple of large silica gel bags in the car. You could try shutting off the air vent to the outside along with pointing the air flow to the cabin rather than the screen.

Hope that helps

I've got a small microwaveable silica bag but will look at something bigger/newer. That's a good idea about the vent. Will give that a go. Thanks.

The boot lid doesn't have any insulation or sound deadening and I'm wondering if its causing some condensation too. Same under the bonnet. Would these have traditionally have had sound proofing?

MOT passed!

Its taken quite a lot of time over the past month to get most of the small issues sorted out.

So grateful for this forum, there are so many little issues that I've come across where 5 mins of searching gives either the correct answer or a major steer to resolving the problem. Thanks for all of the help.

Electrics are now working well, the colour wiring diagram is brilliant for troubleshooting.

Fuelling issue turned out to be spark plugs and everything seems to be running as it should, be great to get out for a decent drive and shake down of any other issues.

Back on the road but lots still to do. Lots of interior trim to sort out and some repairs to headlining to be made. New boot floor to make. Not happy with the colour difference with the doors and wings, I used a different lighter primer and lacquer and its made quite a difference. I'll probably repaint the wings in the spring as the newer compressor has made a much better job. Need to work on my door alignment as well, they aren't sitting/shutting quite right at the moment.

Any tips for dealing with condensation? Has always been a bit of an issue for me and I'd like to make sure its not excessive.

The springs were about a year old when it was taken off the road so new in terms of use. I think the low angle and wide lens exaggerates the look of the height. It doesn't seem too bad in the real.

Thanks Simon.

I'm a bit undecided on the trim. Removed it to weld up the holes on the doors and 3/4 panels, quite like the black stripe Saab sticker that goes there so may try that. I like the monochrome look of just black and silver hence the wheels. Maybe some photoshop tests once I get some decent pics outside.

Bumpers are back on now. Not that they will do much but it just seems so fragile without them.

Looking great, I really like the black wheels and the cleaner look without the side trim - looks quite good without the bumpers too.

Lots of footery little things being done in the past couple of week. Lining up wings and doors, finishing underseal and stone chip, painting wheels etc.

I've adjusted the clutch and biting point is feeling better. Still a little to go. Bled the brakes and adjusted the handbrake. Changed fuel lines to more appropriate size and its feeling a lot better too.

This forum has been so helpful, so much great info for most of the smaller issues I've been having, an amazing resource!

I've slowly started putting everything back together now, a few more nights and it should be just about done.

Quite picture heavy posts so broke this one into two.

The previous owner had put some tacky silver beading along the lip of the roof and over the years the adhesive had reacted badly with the paint underneath. I thought I might be able to just sand this back and blend in the new paint. Nope, that's beyond my limited painting ability. I really hadn't wanted to paint the whole roof at this stage but with the colour being slightly different anyway thought it would be daft not to do it just now too. As soon as I was committed my little compressor decided to die, typical. I sanded back and took a risk of just flashing the main roof with new paint and top coat. It's passable from distance and will probably polish up well. Its better than it was and the sides are now rust free. The new compressor makes such a different to painting, its a lot more powerful and has a bigger capacity.

I've got a couple of days off work so am hoping to make a bit more progress and start putting everything back together. On the list -

Wheels - sand down and resprayed

Clutch feel still isn't quite right so I've just replaced the seals in the slave and master cylinders and re-bled - refit tomorrow.

Brakes - need bled and hand brake adjusted.

Rough running/idling issue, after about 30 seconds of idling the car dies. It also doesn't seem too responsive to the throttle. When it was on the road it would start strongly now it slowly comes to life. Suspect its a fuelling problem. - replaced fuel pump, new filter. In the process of replacing fuel line (with the new tank I think I used too large a fuel hose and this may not be sealing properly). Hopefully this will clear up the issues.
