Came across this smooth case gearbox, which I'm assuming is for an early V4, because of the slave cylinder mounted on it (weren't clutches on the 3-speed 2-stroke boxes cable operated)?

I'm guessing it's not a late 2-stroke 4-speed case, as it didn't have a '4' stamped on it.

I took note of the numbers stamped on the box;
707401 stamped on the gearbox casing and 731522 on the bell housing.

Any ideas?

Oh and it was originally on a LHD

Yeah, you can tell it's from a LHD by the fact that it does NOT have the horseshoe shaped "thingy" on the gearchange mechanism, on top of the box.

So the diff/ bellhousing was originally on a 4 spd box and then the box swapped for a 3spd at some point?

I've heard back from someone who is an expert on Saab gearboxes;
"It's an early longnose 3 speed not a 4 speed, easily identified by having a clutch slave cylinder and one adjuster for the shift fork on the back cover, all earlier
gearboxes had cast iron casings so nothing special there I'm afraid."

The box is cast iron, apparently standard boxes weren't fitted with cast iron boxes, so perhaps that tallies with the '96 Special 2T 4sp box' that Dynorog identified!

I am wondering if the transmission casing is cast iron.

The Bell Housing is from a MY66 > 96 Special 2T 4sp box.731552
I can’t find a reference to 707401 in 2 stroke parts book. maybe it’s a later box from a later V4.

Bell housing is two stroke, not V4. Have a smooth case V4 from 1967/8. It has V4 embossed on case.
Is the freewheel selector steel?

I’ll look it up tomorrow in my 2 stroke parts manual.
Cheers
