What is the correct procedure for connecting the gear change mechanism to the gearbox?

I'm assuming the column change would be in reverse (in order to remove the key), so would that mean you have to manually put the gearbox into reverse before joining the arm to the column?

Or is everything place in neautral first?

Either way - what does reverse/neutral look like on the gearbox?

Some photos would be very handy.

ps: I don't remember giving this much thought before - just join the two up and it'll work!?
