| I replaced the exhaust collars at the weekend and had to move the coil to get better access. Now the car won't start!?
I'm getting power to the coil when the ignition is turned on and I connected my timing light to see if I was getting a pulse down the spark leads (I was), but it doesn't seem enough to light up the spark plugs.
I have electric (accuspark) points and was worried I'd somehow cooked the module in the dizzy, but just replaced with a new one and still no spark.
Any ideas? |

| To add to my woes, I thought I’d take out a spark plug, managed to rest my ratchet spanner between the spark plug and the back of the alternator, got loads of sparks, then the car tried to start up- on its own! No key in the ignition, had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop #128563; and as you know, the car was in reverse, so very slowly, the car backed into a wall! Thankfully not too much damage, hopefully just the bumper overriders will need to be repainted.
Not quite sure how to fix it, if I reconnect the battery, it just tries to start up again!?!

| Disconnected the alternator but if I touch the positive lead to the battery, it still try’s to start.
Disconnected the starter, but if I replace the battery lead, the car is dead, no power to anything, ignition and fuse box included

| | Original post, any possibility you have connected the coil the wrong way and burnt the ignition out? | |

| I changed the alternator and ignition switches to spare ones, but still no power. So I assume the starter needed to be connected again, tried both cables separately while connecting the positive cable to the battery and everything behaved itself!
Went back to where I started and could see I was getting a spark now, turned the car over and it started! However the horn started blaring so I turned everything off and will go back to it another day.

| Quick update - just had an auto electrician round to see if he can sort it out.
Managed to get it to start, but only by turning the dizzy through 45deg - I'm now worried I've either stripped thetiming gears (when it was turning over in reverse), or it's jumped a cog or two - will only know with a bit more digging

| OK, I finally have some success to report...
Bought some points to go back to basics - but before I changed them over, I remembered my spare engine (it came from a 95 that now has a Volvo engine) had a dizzy fitted - also with accuspark. I swapped it over, lined everything up and hey presto - the car started! Fine tuned it with a timing gun and she seems to be OK!
Couldn't take it for a test drive as the tank is leaking - I don't know if the jolt from backing into the wall dislodged something, but the smell of petrol was suddenly very strong. Felt around the breather pipe and it was wet, so now need to empty and remove the (annoyingly full) tank for inspection. I had previously repaired the breather pipe using solder, so perhaps it wasn't quite petrol (or ethanol) proof, or said jolt dislodged it.
