My 1966 Monte Carlo has the chrome surrounds on the rear side windows, both of which have rusted in the lower rear corners. I understand this was a problem with the chrome surrounds due to poor plating.

Luckily, I have sourced two NOS LH and RH complete window surrounds ex Sweden, and was wondering how hard it is to get the frames off the glass, and whether the sealing rubber can be replaced if available.

This is one job I've never had to contemplate on a 96, so looking for tips to make the job easier and prevent damage to the new surrounds.

Any help appreciated.

If they're the same design as the standard frames there's little countersunk pozi head screws in the top and bottom leading edge corners, pop the straight edge off and the glass slides out of the frame pretty easily.

I ended up using a roll of gasket I got from Minispares and lining the channels with that, I had to trim it down, but it worked well

Thanks, yes, they are the same frames just chromed.

What sort was the gasket - rubber? Do you have a link to what you used?

Cheers

The rubber is U-channel. Had one fail 45yrs ago and stripped the chrome frame off. Didn’t rebuild it.
Have installed similar style of rubber on my WW2 Jeep windscreen which had two glass plates inserted into a frame with U-channel seals.
The Rubber will be bigger than needed so you trim off excess when installed.
Not done the V4 ones yet so unaware how easy/difficult the job is. I doubt re-use of the old seal is possible.

I think I still have some left in a ziplock bag with the Minispares logo (and hopefully) part number on it. It was only flat rubber gasket and I bent it around the outer edges of the glass, worked well.

Woolies or similar would have u-channel that Woody's referring to, I've just moved house and my garage is in chaos until the weather warms up and I can get a bit more organised - I'll have a look today, but everything is in a box!
