| I've fitted the earlier 2-stroke steering wheel, obviously the horn ring doesn't work as it's different set up to the V4.
So I thought I'd install a horn button on the dash - which in theory sounds easy!?
But I'm struggling to get it to work, has anyone else done this or hve any tips?

| | Your dashboard is gorgeous! I really miss these colorful interiors. Do you know if your horn is actuated by the négative or positive lead. You might have to use a relay. | |

| Simon. Does the horn the work, when it's connected directly to a battery?
How have you wired it?
A horn normally has 12 volts conected directly to one connection, from the fuse box, the other connection goes up to the steering wheel, simply to give it the earth connection, when you push the switch. The standard arrangement does not use a relay.

| I think I traced the black wire that normally goes to the V4 contact on the column - if that goes into one side of the button, where does the other side go (to the fusebox or just to ground)?
The red wire appears to go from the horn to the fusebox.
The horn does work - it's brand new. | |

| | The black wire (-) goes to à junction box, where it feeds à Grey wire that goes directly to the horn. So, your button on the dash should be connected to earth on one side an to the horn on the other. | Edited by - christophe on 19 Dec 2024 14:14:19 | |

It certainly sounds like it's as I decsribed above. ie the horn simply has a direct +ve feed from the fuse box, and a black wire, (black is always earth), from the second conection on the horn, that feeds up to the connection in the steering wheel. When you push the horn, you simply complete the earth circuit, to make the horn work.
Have you got 12 volts at the horn connection? If yes, I would suspect a break in the probably black wire, that feeds up to the horn button. If no, then there's perhaps a break in the wire feeding the horn, from the fuse box.
Or perhaps:-
Bad fuse, or bad fuse connection? Bad spade terminal on the fuse box?

| I might well be wrong but does the horn need to be operated while the hands are on the steering wheel ?

| Perhaps you could you a stalk from a 68/69 car? These MYs the steering wheel had a big rubber crash pad centre without a horn push, and the horn was operated via one of the stalks (not sure whether it was the indicator or the wash/wipe stalk).

| | My 69 v4 deluxe had the horn operated by pulling back on the wiper stalk. Best to look at wiring diagram for earth contacts. What year is the wiring loom? | |

| I've mounted my horn on the dash for much the same reason, replacement steering wheel seemed to make the connection always on. Instead of drilling a hole I removed one of the bolts for the heater controls and swapped in a push button switch, will take a pic. I did this years ago so will need to check the mounting but its not an issue for MOT.
