| I've just had my ol' blue 96 in for an "Offline" Classic Car Safety test. Picked up on two things:-
Below par handbrake. I went through a lot of trial and tribulations with the handbrake on the green Saab earlier this year. There's a 2 page thread on the subject.... I'll strip, rebuild, and replace the cables, to see if that helps.
Perceptible play in front wheel bearings.
This is what I want to ask about here. I replaced these bearings 3 months, with new bearings bought, I think, from Malbrad, a long time ago. Any thoughts on why new wheel bearings would have perceptible play? I have a hydraulic press, and very carefully made sure everything was square, and fully home in terms of the bearings going into their housing. Although the centre nut is the tightest nut on the car, my torque wrench does go up to the required setting. I will check the torque again, but given that they are NOT tapered bearings, not sure if that will make any difference.
Thoughts?

| The quality of Professional Parts Sweden wheel bearings (which they probably are) is just sh¡te. I have a set that I've fortunately never needed yet, but I've heard no end of bad things about them.

Melle I suspected it might be something like this, so WHERE can you buy decent quality front wheel bearings? Like SKF for example.

| That canny be, someone must make quality bearings. Some of the gearbox bearings I have bought in the past were made by SKF in Austria.
Surely these wheel bearings can't be some odd, unusual size??

| They are indeed an odd, unusual size, and I don't think anyone other than PPS makes them. I've been lucky enough so far I could always grab a used one off the shelf and salvage it when I needed one.

| | Are those from Skandix the same? Do you have the dimensions? I'd like to check in my catalogs. | Edited by - christophe on 14 Dec 2024 21:12:35 | |

| Christopher I'm going to measure them up, and have a look round some bearing manufacturers. I'll post the dimensions here.

| Hello Andy,
I've used SB on a number of occasions and find their service is fine, hence no issues with SKF which I have used on some classics.
Another company worth considering is RUBIX UK who deal significantly with Timken bearings: https://uk.rubix.com/en/timken/c-1361
Their bearing finder is a useful reference tool: https://uk.rubix.com/en/rolling-bearings/c-15-15-15
Without a doubt, IMHO, Timken is the ultimate bearing and the company deals with numerous bearing types.
Regards.

| Decent quality V4 front wheel bearings have not been available for decades, despite them being advertised here and there. Very keen to hear if anyone manages to buy decent ones somewhere, and I'll immediately get a set too.
Quality grease seals are equally difficult to get, the ones for industrial applications are rated for a much lower rpm than required for cars, and won't last very long: https://www.saab-v4.co.uk/speedball/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=38605

| Melle. I'm obviously wrong, but I thought that SKF were a good brand name. I have a couple of new SKF gearbox bearings and they're made in Austria, NOT China....

| SKF are indeed a good brand name! The problem is that their 233200 bearings have not been available for a long time, even if some sites list them.

| I think that will do the job – if you can indeed get it. I've ordered them several times from different places in the past; they showed as available on the websites, but no one was able to actually supply them.
