Currently working on one of my rear wheel arches. I had the wing off to have the paintwork on the rear quarter panel cleaned up by my local paint shop.

Had a little welding to do, and now want to paint and protect the wheel arch.

Has anyone got any thoughts on protective paint/coverings for the wheel arch?

If I mentioned things like POR 15, Schutz, Raptor, Hamerite, what would the collective thoughts be?

Someone locally mentioned Raptor being very good, but when I looked at it, it mentioned that it contained Isocyantes. nasty stuff I think, and I don't have any air fed mask breathing systems.

Hello Andy,

For any unprotected paintwork that requires painting on, my first choice is always U-POL etch primer and then their primer prior to top coating; these are quality products.

In respect of protective covering, Raptor is excellent BUT as you say needs a mask fed air supply for the operator if being done indoors.

I'd dismiss Hammerite spray products but I do rate their brush on underseal.

If you want to take it up a notch then Bilt Hamber Dynax UB [my personal favourite] or Dinitrol, along with Schutz which is now owned by Granville.

POR15 is excellent but comes in for poor press and that's purely down to operator error and failure to adhere to the required process !!!

Of course all down to personal choice.

Regards.

Richard.

Bilt Hamber wax will be the last coat so say, but it's not paint. I was also thinking about the hammering that these wheel arches get, since in the 1970s, nobody seems to have thought about plastic shields in the wheel arches.
I use POR 15 quite a lot, usually with Rust Buster 2 part epoxy below.
I was just really fishing to see what others use, and what their views were on the various coatings available. I'm not a great fan of underseal. It invariably dries out with time, and then the moisture gets behind it, to do its devlish work, unseen!!!!!
Years, (No decades) ago, with a different car I literally found water bubbles, under the underseal.

I usually use a 2K PPG epoxy primer, 2 coats. You could also use somethink like Spies-Hecker red-brown, which is also available in 1K form. Then traditional bituminous schutz, or you could use Raptor Coating. In any even the Raptor gun is the best to apply any of those finishes over a normal schutz gun that has limited adjustment on the nozzle.

Cheers
